The story takes place after and will be continuation of sorts. I'd play the first game before heading to this. There can be the odd part that requires you to work out what you need to progress, but by that point you should be feeling like you're being partially guided to the story anyway. Following the locations mentioned or marked via the PDA's discovered there the game will start leading you toward all story critical locations. In the first couple hours a few key events should happen as well as marking points of interest.

You start out basically just scavenging to work out the very basics so will feel a bit aimless at first but you can quickly start growing food and producing clean water at your base, and growing food can largely take care of your water needs too if you don't have the blueprints for water filtration. Note that I'm talking about the original Subnautica, not Below Zero as I have not played that, but I imagine the answer to those questions will remain the same: I found them particularly demanding in this game and it would really cut explorations short if you ran out of food/water on an expedition and have to make a trip back to your sub or base. Little tip in general to this thread, unless they have changed it: I really suggest turning off the food/water meters if those really annoy you in most games. I will say I personally recommend the game, it's definitely one of the best if not THE best survival game, and even then I'd barely count it as that just because the game has a start and an end, it's not just endlessly building your base and surviving. The planet is alien and the creatures are not Earth species too, and often go for more absurd horror. If your fear of underwater creatures is moderate you might still enjoy this.

You CAN technically kill the creatures, but good luck with that on some of them. The point of this game isn't to fight the creatures, and pretty much all of the weapons in the game are non-lethal and meant to hold the creature in place while you get past. You'll explore plenty of beautiful areas in the ocean, and there's plenty of terrifying creatures, some deeper in the sea, some not as deep, such as one of the most terrifying ones patrolling an area you'll need to go to fairly early on in the game.
